No.8@Arup 2016

Project: Invited design competition for stair installation Location: Fitzrovia, London Year: 2016 Award: Special Commendation

No.8 @ Arup is an annual design competition that provides an opportunity for emerging architectural practices to showcase their creativity in Arup’s London office.
For the 2016 edition, invited practices were asked to design a stairway for Arup's London office that would elicit joy and generate delight.
Our goal from the outset was to propose an elegant and resolved stair concept for an object that would provide pleasure for the users of the building.
"The jury were so impressed by (the) entry, the presentation and the beautifully stunning model" that a special Commendation was awarded.

To elicit joy, the stair aims to present itself as a “thing of beauty”.

The stair is intented to be a new means of experiencing the building. Landings alterate from left to right to ensure vertical circulation efficiency, creating an elegant cascading configuration that provides unique views. This promotes the physical and visual interaction between employees as users function as actors and audience, animating the building.

The compact layout of the stair minimizes spatial intrusion in the atrium. Its location and sculptural form enhances approach to atrium.

The outcome of our project is the result of an analytical process where we considered specific aspects of the existing space including vertical and horizontal circulation, the use of spaces around the atium, the efficiency of the stair configuration, major view points around the atrium and the impact on arrival.
The stair is positioned adjacent to the lifts to promote an easy alternative to vertical circulation, maintaining the existing layout of adjacent spaces to minimize disruption and retain flexibility of use and overlook.
